Posted November 8, 2011:Can Breast feeding cause cavities?
Can breast feeding cause cavities?
Breast feeding is a most beneficial phenomenon for both babies and mothers. The emotional bonding that occurs between mother and child is special and the immunity that the breast milk grants to the infant has been established long ago. Although breast milk is generally not as cariogenic (cavity producing) when compared with eating fermented carbohydrates and sugars or drinking sugar-containing liquids from a baby bottle, ad libitum (on demand) breastfeeding can also be a source of dental decay.
The frequent exposure to fermentable carbohydrates and sugars creates a very inviting environment for acid-producing bacteria whether it be milk and juice from a baby bottle or natural milk from the breast. As always, sensible moderation and judgment are the keys to any nutritional or dietary regimen..
It’s important to remember to wipe the infant’s mouth with a damp washcloth or piece of gauze after feeding even before the baby teeth erupt. This procedure is not merely cleansing but will also be a gentle introduction to the actual tooth brushing which will be introduced later.

Posted May 23, 2011:Fluoride! Fluoride! Fluoride! What's it all about?
Fluoride in the Water
In 1945 Grand Rapids Michigan was the first city to introduce the public health measure of adding Fluoride into the public water supply. The controlled addition (.7 ppm) of Sodium Fluoride to the drinking water has proven to be the single most effective method for the prevention of tooth decay (dental caries)because that form of Fluoride becomes part and parcel of the enamel in the developing and calcifying teeth of newborn babies and growing children and ….even adults. The fluoride benefit is derived when drinking the water from the tap or injesting the water as part of the cooking process (soup, boiling vegetables etc.) Chicago is one of many cities in the U.S. that provides this valuable public oral health advantage for its population.
Fluoride Vitamins
For families whose water supply does not contain fluoride, it is recommended that infants and children be given a fluoride- containing vitamin (with pediatrician consultation). The vitamins are available in the form of chewable capsules or liquid drops that can be added to juice etc.
****Caution: The fluoride in the water and fluoride in vitamins are mutually exclusive. Do not give your children the vitamin if you are utilizing the public fluoride enhanced water supply.****
Topical Fluoride in The Dental Office
As an additional preventive measure, it is recommended that children receive a topical application of fluoride at every periodic dental checkup. The topical fluoride penetrates the uppermost layer of tooth enamel making the teeth less susceptible to decay. The fluoride should be applied by the dentist or one of the dental staff in the form of a gel, foam, liquid or preferably a varnish.
Fluoridated Toothpaste
Brushing your teeth with a toothpaste containing fluoride is another way of providing the maximum protection against tooth decay on a daily basis as part of home oral health care. It’s important for parents to supervise young children with their tooth brushing routine. Very young children need the assistance of an adult to enhance the effectiveness of the brushing and to prevent the excessive ingestion of toothpaste since young children are not adept at rinsing and spitting.

Posted May 6, 2011:Why We Prefer Not to Sedate Our Patients
The dental visit should be a most pleasant, meaningful, educational and pain-free experience for a young child. By skillfully guiding even the most apprehensive or reluctant children through a process of showing, telling and then doing we take away the fear of the unknown. For this step by step method to succeed, we require the full attention of the child with great emphasis on eye to eye contact.
Mind altering drugs do not cure phobia, and moreover while under sedation the ability to communicate is severely compromised. Although the specific dental treatment is accomplished, the patient leaves completely unaware of what has occurred. So, the child brings the same phobia to the next visit…and the next…and the next… into adulthood.. We believe strongly in the importance of competently establishing an up-close and positive relationship with our child patients in a friendly drug-free atmosphere.
